Thomas Evershed, a civil engineer, made the construction plan. To build canals that would divert water from the Niagara falls while still abiding the boundaries set in place by New York's government. The project began in 1886 and cost millions which was funded by the Cataract Construction company. Once it was finished the Cataract Company decided to use AC electricity and gave a contract to Westinghouse Electric Company to make ten generators for the Adams power plant.
