I got the idea for my topic after viewing the 100 leaders NHD website and looked at Thomas Edison since I wanted to do someone that played a role in the electrical industry, I then researched on him and found that Direct Current (DC) power which he invented isn’t used as much and Alternating current (AC) is more prominent so once I found out that Nikola Tesla invented the 1st practical motor for AC I wanted to do him for NHD. I also discovered that Tesla wasn't in any of my school history books, unlike Thomas Edison which also made me want to learn more about Tesla.
Once I started researching I went on databases such as, Student Resources in Context, Biography In Context and EBSCO, I also borrowed “Nikola Tesla Spark of Genius” from my library. As I learned more about my topic I went back to databases the ones I previously used with new search terms and General Virtual Reference Library and Proquest Historical New York Times. I also got more books such as “Empires of Light”, “Tesla inventor of Electrical Age” which were my most comprehensive sources and were very helpful for discovering quotes. I also looked more into online articles on PBS and college websites. It was around this point I found a PBS documentary that was helpful for finding quotes from high profile historians, Eventually my History teacher showed me the Chronicling America website which helped me find many newspapers about Nikola Tesla, Alternating current, and my heart, impact and change. I also was able to interview Anika Taylor from the Bakken Museum which is dedicated to electrical history. When I first began researching I had some knowledge with electricity, but I did not know that there was a second industrial revolution in America. I also learned about the technology with the alternating current induction motor and the difference between Alternating current and direct current.
I decided to a website for my presentation style, because I have done a website previously last year of NHD and I wanted to see if I improve compared to last year. Once I started with building the website I took all the advice I was given during 6th grade and I feel as though, I have improved with my website skills, such as using images and quotes to more effectively show a point of view and how to effectively give a opinion. I have also became better with sharing information with less words.
At the end of the 19th century, there was a great scientific debate being waged about whether the United States should use DC (direct current) electricity or AC (alternating current) electricity. Nikola Tesla revolutionized the electrical industry with a series of patents that made the AC polyphase system more efficient and inexpensive to produce massive amounts of electricity. Tesla's AC polyphase system was purchased by Westinghouse Electric in 1889 to power multiple NY cities and would leave a legacy as the world standard for electrical power.
